We've found a partial answer, unfortunatly it only seems to work on IE.
Here's an example for anyone who might find some use in it. We're
continuing to research.

<TABLE border=1>
  <COLGROUP>
    <COL style="display:none">
  <THEAD>
    <TR>
      <TH SCOPE=col>ID</TH>
      <TH>Col 1</TH>
      <TH>Col 2</TH>
      <TH>Col 3</TH>
      <TH>Col 4</TH>
    </TR>
  </THEAD>
  <TBODY>
    <TR>
      <TD>ID_1</TD>
      <TD>1</TD>
      <TD>1</TD>
      <TD>1</TD>
      <TD>1</TD>
    </TR>
    <TR>
      <TD>ID_2</TD>
      <TD>2</TD>
      <TD>2</TD>
      <TD>2</TD>
      <TD>2</TD>
    </TR>
  </TBODY>
</TABLE>
