There's no disagreement about being at the mercy of other's goodwill; but
IMHO it's a bit easier to be at the mercy of other people's money than to be
at the mercies of other people's software. A loss of funds can be dealt
with, even temporarily; having to completely redo a workflow because a key
piece of 3rd party software has either disappeared or had its terms change (
i.e. blackmail) is a different story in time and manpower (as well as
money).
