I'm surprised at this, since gmail relies on xmlhttp, and
xmlhttp is supported by ie, gecko, and safari/khtml.

did he explain further?
presumably it isn't because he cares about the miniscule number
of real-world user browsers that support javascript 1.5 but
don't have xmlhttp.....

did he say anything about support for through-the-web editing?
i know he has blogged about that:
